Oceanside - MVIHES joins the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation to provide a lasting legacy in Oceanside
Englishman River in the rain seemed to be an appropriate place for Mid-Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society (MVIHES) and the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation to sign a partnership agreement establishing a fund for the future protection and restoration of local watercourses.
Thanks to the Foundation a new fund, the MVIHES Fund, has been created through a partnership with the Foundation. "We are happy to establish this new partnership which will have long term benefit to our community", said Cindy Koutecky, President of the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation.
Cash, securities, bequests and other forms of planned giving may go into this fund to be used for work done by the Habitat Enhancement Society, and at the same time, provide financial and tax benefits to the donor. President of MVIHES, Heather West, is excited about the new potential for the future, "The work we do often extends over a typical planning year. This fund will help give us a solid basis to plan into the future."
Before leaving the signing event, members of both parties signed large maple leaves, sending them down the river as a symbolic gesture of their commitment to wild salmon and rivers in perpetuity in Oceanside.
MVIHES coordinates the implementation of the recovery plan for the Englishman River; partners with municipal, regional, provincial and federal government agencies on various projects; offers opportunities for local stewardship and hands-on experiences in the watersheds and on the beach; maps and monitors eelgrass; and offers many kinds of public education programs and events. The Society works to ensure the continuation of healthy ecosystems for salmon, resulting in healthy water supplies for humans and fish, healthy watersheds supporting a wide range of birds and animals, and quality of life for residents.
The Parksville-Qualicum Community
Foundation mourns the loss of one of our
Founding members, Jim Storey

Jim was born in Dundurn, Saskatchewan and had vivid memories of growing up. He kept in touch with his first grade teacher into 2006. Service was part of Jim's life and included time in the Air Force, overseas. He next satisfied his urge to travel working in the merchant navy throughout the world. In 1949 he moved on to exciting times on the West Coast, raising a family and working a variety of jobs in the province. His time in Victoria was rewarding and challenging and he maintained his contacts from that time. During the 1970's Jim and Jutta moved to Qualicum Beach and bought the Snow White Motel - enter involvement in the tourism industry and the Chamber of Commerce. Jim loved to talk about the fun times and the tough times. Yet he never let on how the car accident in 1989 caused him daily pain for the rest of his life. Jim took pleasure in supplying the photos for Brad Wylie's history book on Qualicum Beach and working with Brad and many other community volunteers. He played a leadership role in getting new community organizations started and on their feet. His personal life was private, though he would often mention how proud he was of his children and he loved their family times together. Jim said he was honoured to be part of the community and felt privileged to work with other volunteers.
Donations can be made in his memory to continue his vision to the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation, Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce Jim Storey Memorial Fund.
