Local Resources. Local Stakeholders. Local Solutions.
The Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation was established in 1999 to seize promising opportunities in Oceanside. In its first decade, it has focussed on working with donors to build endowment funds that provide long term resources for long term solutions. In addition, it has awarded $100,000 to more than 60 community groups building their capacity in the areas of health, education, social services, the arts, culture, and the environment.
The Foundation's vision for the second decade is simply stated. "We grow your gift. We build vibrant communities." The Foundation's broadened role is to stimulate new ideas, increase citizen participation, and strengthen community philanthropy in the community of communities on the East Coast of Vancouver Island that is called "Oceanside".
The Foundation's fund development goal is to build permanent endowment funds totaling $5 million dollars by the year 2020. The income earned on these funds will allow significant support for the community through grants given every year at the May annual meeting.
The Youth Action Committee, known as "The Hand", is working to build the youth community of Oceanside through its "by youth, for youth" actions, its work to build the youth fund, and its focus on building future leaders. Says Board member David Roach, "Our population includes four generations with very different perspectives, interests and abilities. This is a great opportunity for us to engage in cross-generational dialogue about the things that will make our communities great places to live, work and play."
The Foundation status is a non-profit, tax-exempt grantmaking organization. It provides tax receipts for all its donations over $10. Governance comes from an independent, voluntary board of directors, that is broadly representative of the community. It is an operational Board. This means that each Board member contributes to the day to day running of the Foundation, in addition to playing their governance roles. There is no paid staff, and the office in the train station is a contribution from the Town of Qualicum Beach. There is no paid staff.
The Foundation is a member of the Community Foundations of Canada, the national voice representing 165 community foundations across the country. Together, community foundations help Canadians invest in building strong and resilient places to live, work and play.
Interested in an exciting and challenging way to contribute to the community? The Parksville Qualicum Foundation is always open to receiving expressions of interest from community builders who wish to serve as board members or volunteers. The nominating committee is always on the look out for new Directors to sit on the Board. We seek a balance of skills, diversity, and connections across the communities of Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Errington and Coombs, Nanoose Bay, Lasqueti Island, Bowser, and all the communities in between. For those not ready to commit to Board service, there are a number of committees that welcome volunteers. That is an excellent way to get to know the Foundation prior to "diving in" to Board service. Of course, donors are the most precious resource. Without them, there would be no community foundation.
