Youth conference offers fresh perspectives

Going in, Andrew Skipsey tended to view the local community in segments. Even the kids at his school, he said, were grouped according to where they called home.
Coming out of Saturday's Teens of the Towns Youth Conference, the 17 year old Kwalikum Secondary student has a different point of view. He now sees Oceanside as "more of a whole, rather than separate areas."
"Its a rather empowering thought".
When people pull together as a whole,he said, more can be accomplished.
Talk got around to the Second World War, a time when young and old alike paddled in the same direction.
Now, there isn't such a unifying purpose or call to action. But Skipsey, grandson of the former Qualicum Beach mayor Art Skipsey, said there can be a similar level of effort.
