COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANTS IN HIGH DEMAND Oceanside Star Published Thursday, March 04, 2010
Shifting economic realities appear to be generating more interest than ever in the Parksville-Qualicum Foundation's community grants program. The Foundation annually awards grants to qualifying community organizations to help fund initiatives especially those designed to enhance community capacity for the future. In the previous 10 years it has given $100,000 to more than 60 groups. This year more organizations have requested application forms than in previous years, said Foundation President Gale Mossman. "We expect keen interest right up until our March 19 application deadline" Mossman said while there is no hard evidence as to what's behind the increased interest, it is reflecting national and provincial trends that see less government funding for community organizations. "It's ironic that at a time when governments are encourating communities to become increasingly self-reliant, communities are challenged to find the capacity to maintain existing programs and services, yet alone do more." The Foundation faces its own challenges as it has less money to award this year than previously. The Foundation's community grant funds are generated through its investment portfolio which similar to most investments, is generating lower returns. "The good news is we have funds to make community grants this year", said Mossman. "The challenging news is that we expect there will be more need than ever, and we don't have the ability to meet it all."
