At the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation, we see every grant as an investment in the people and programs that make our region stronger. Forward House Society, a grant recipient of the Oceanside Prosperity Fund in 2024, put those dollars to work in ways that touched lives across our community—from seniors in retirement homes to individuals on the path of recovery.
Empowering Through Education
With support from PQCF, Forward House delivered mental health education workshops to groups in the community, including residents at Berwick Retirement Community. Seniors shared that they wished they had learned these coping skills decades earlier, a testament to the lasting value of mental health education at every age.
Building Skills and Confidence
A new sewing group was launched, starting with placemats and aprons, and quickly progressing to skirts, trousers, and even bags. Participants spoke of the pride and confidence they felt creating items they could wear and use. Similarly, a new food mixer allowed the cooking group to work more independently, giving members a boost in both skills and self-esteem.
Strengthening Systems and Security
Technology upgrades were another important area of impact. With outdated systems and even a past security breach, Forward House used grant funds to purchase new computers, upgrade systems, and secure cybersecurity insurance. All essential steps to protect a small but vital local community organization.
Expanding Safe Spaces for Recovery
Physical space matters in healing. With the addition of a new wall, Forward House created two multi-use spaces that now host one-to-one counselling and recovery programs. This change allowed them to continue providing critical addiction recovery support even after giving up a downtown rental space due to funding challenges.
Investing in Staff and Safety
Grant dollars also supported on-site Violence Prevention training for the entire staff team, delivered by SafeCare BC. This not only ensured compliance with provincial standards but also strengthened staff confidence and team cohesion.
Reaching More People in Need
Finally, advertising made possible by the grant helped Forward House raise awareness of its programs. Many new clients discovered, for the very first time, that support was available right here in Parksville. As one client shared:
“I have always struggled alone, but since finding Forward House I am no longer alone. I know I have people to help me with anything I face.”
And from a family member in the recovery program:
“Having people to talk to and share our experiences has changed our lives. Through this group, I’ve found that help is only a heartbeat away.”
