At the Parksville-Qualicum Community Foundation (PQCF), our Board of Directors plays an essential role in guiding the Foundation’s work to support and strengthen Oceanside communities. Each board member brings their own experiences, values, and passion for community building.
In this Board Member Spotlight, we’re pleased to introduce Steve Bryan, a career military and finance leader, who shares what inspired him to join the board and why he believes local organizations hold the power to create lasting change.
A Career of Service, A Return to Roots
Born and raised in BC, Steve joined the PQCF Board in 2026 after returning to Vancouver Island in 2020. His career path reflects a lifetime of leadership and service: 27 years in the Canadian Forces, with postings across Canada and multiple international operational assignments, followed by sixteen years as Chief Financial Officer of the Canadian Medical Protective Association. In 2004, in recognition of his contributions, he was invested into the Order of Military Merit in the grade of Officer by the Governor-General.
A graduate of Shawnigan Lake School, Steve holds degrees from Royal Military College (BA), Norwich (MA), and Queen’s University (MBA), and is currently a Doctoral candidate at the University of Birmingham.
“I strongly believe in the power of local, grassroots organizations to effect positive change in a community,” Steve shares. “The Foundation can play an important role in bringing people, organizations, and resources together to achieve meaningful results that would not otherwise be possible.”
A Community Worth Protecting
For Steve, what stands out most about Oceanside is its people.
“Amongst its many visible attributes, Oceanside is blessed with an engaged citizenry that cares deeply about the community,” he says. “At a time when external pressures may fray societal bonds, it is even more important than ever for local organizations to bring people together to retain and build on the sense of community that makes Oceanside such a great place to live.”
Looking Ahead
Steve sees real momentum building for the Foundation.
“As the Foundation becomes better known in the community, its potential to increase its positive impact can only grow,” he says.
Why Community Foundations Matter
Steve believes the Foundation’s real strength lies in its ability to turn local ideas into local impact.
“At the community level, small actions can have a big impact, and yet too often great ideas run into obstacles,” he explains. “With its Oceanside focus, the Foundation can help some of those great initiatives become successful by mobilizing resources and facilitating connections. Local matters!”
A strong believer in the power of local organizations to effect meaningful change, Steve is committed to improving the quality of community life in Oceanside — and to helping PQCF continue building on that promise for years to come.
