Annual Grant

Save Estuary Land Society

On behalf of the Save Estuary Land Society, I would like to express our gratitude to the Parksville Qualicum Community Foundation for awarding our society a $4,000.00 Annual Grant to help fund habitat restoration at the French Creek Estuary Nature Preserve. The 23 acre Nature Preserve was created thanks to a remarkable community collaboration which raised over $5,180,000 in funds and in kind and the land is now jointly owned by the BC Parks Foundation and the Regional District of Nanaimo. Though we received your grant in 2022, restoration was delayed until 2023 due to necessary management steps and sensitive wildlife considerations.

In November 2023 your Foundation was the major funder of the first Nature Preserve habitat restoration project when restoration of a former bike jump area was completed. Thanks to your generous gift, a dedicated & hardworking team of 25 community volunteers planted 385 native trees & shrubs. Work began by removing invasive plants, then planting holes were dug, and countless wheelbarrows of soil & bark mulch added to amend the ground. The final step was pounding in stakes and caging plants vulnerable to deer browse.

The Parksville Qualicum Community Foundation’s gift funded the purchase of all 385 native trees and plants including Grand fir, Western Red cedar, Big Leaf maple, Dull Oregan grape, Sword fern, Thimbleberry, Oceanspray, Snowberry and Red Elderberry in addition to the purchase of soil, mulch and other supplies.

The French Creek Estuary Nature Preserve is a richly biodiverse ecosystem. Its Coastal Douglas-fir forest is classified as globally endangered, it’s located in one of the nine most ecologically at-risk areas in Canada and is one of the top five zones in BC for supporting the highest number of species and ecosystems at risk. In fact, 20 Species at Risk (red and blue-listed) have been reported in and near the Nature Preserve.

Without your Annual Grant funding this project wouldn’t have been possible. Your generous gift to nature has funded a living legacy to the Parksville Qualicum Community Foundation which will support countless species of wildlife, increase biodiversity, and enhance people’s enjoyment of nature in perpetuity. On behalf of our society and the community, thank you.
